Pigmentation Correction
IPL pigmentation correction effectively fades and removes age spots, sun spots and freckles (discolouration) to greatly improve overall skin tone, texture and radiance.
Vascular Therapy
Spider veins, broken capillaries, red spots and rosacea can all be reduced and removed to offer clients an even, more uniform complexion.
Photo Rejuvenation
Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smooth out irregularities and enhance your skin’s overall luminosity for a revitalised, youthful glow with IPL photo rejuvenation.
Acne Management
IPL acne management targets acne-prone skin to reduce acne bacteria, breakouts and inflammation for a clearer, more balanced and healthier looking complexion.
What is Photo Rejuvenation?
IPL Photorejuvenation is a non-ablative procedure that uses intense pulsed light to trigger a wound healing response. This process stimulates collagen and elastin production along with several of the skin’s self-rejuvenating mechanisms to improve the signs of ageing and improve skin texture and tone.
Benefits
Evens out skin tone
Softens fine lines and improves texture
Can also help with mild acne scarring and enlarged pores
- Can also help with sun damage, freckles, and age spots
Treatment Details
Sessions: Usually requires a series of treatments (4–6 sessions) for best results.
Downtime: Minimal to none—some redness or darkening of pigmentation may occur temporarily.
Comfort: Often described as a mild snapping sensation on the skin.
In short: Photo Rejuvenation is like a reset button for your skin, helping restore a clearer, more youthful look without surgery or significant downtime.
How does IPL Photo Rejuvenation Work?
The Science Behind It
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL): The machine emits broad-spectrum light in quick pulses.
Targeting Pigment & Vessels:
The light is absorbed by melanin (pigment in freckles, sun spots, age spots)
and by hemoglobin (in tiny blood vessels, redness, broken capillaries).
Selective Absorption: This light energy converts to heat, breaking down unwanted pigment and coagulating small blood vessels without harming surrounding skin.
Natural Removal: Over the following days, the body’s natural healing clears away the pigmented cells or reabsorbs the treated vessels.
Collagen Stimulation
The controlled heat also triggers the skin’s wound-healing response.
This stimulates new collagen and elastin production in the dermis.
Over time, skin becomes smoother, firmer, and more evenly toned.
What it Improves
Sun damage & pigmentation
Redness, capillaries, rosacea
Uneven skin tone
Fine lines & texture
Enlarged pores
In short: Photo Rejuvenation uses light energy to target pigment and redness, while also stimulating collagen for fresher, clearer, and more youthful-looking skin.
Is IPL Photo Rejuvenation suitable for me?
IPL Photo Rejuvenation is suitable for many people, but not everyone. Here’s how to know if it may be right for you:
Generally Suitable for:
Skin Concerns: Sun damage, freckles, pigmentation, redness, broken capillaries, uneven tone, and mild textural issues.
Skin Types: Works best on fair to medium skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–III) because the light can easily differentiate between normal skin and the pigment/vessel being treated.
Age: Commonly used by adults looking to refresh and even out their complexion.
Not Suitable or Caution Needed if:
Very Dark Skin Tones (Fitzpatrick V–VI): Higher risk of burns, hyperpigmentation, or hypopigmentation.
Recent Tanning: Sun or solarium exposure within the last 2–4 weeks.
Pregnant or Breastfeeding: Not recommended.
Certain Medications: Photosensitising medications (like some antibiotics, acne meds such as Roaccutane/Isotretinoin within 6–12 months).
Skin Conditions: Active infections, open wounds, eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis in the area.
History of Keloid Scarring: Use with caution.
Cancer or Certain Medical Conditions: Not suitable if you have skin cancer, epilepsy (due to flashing light), or certain other medical issues—must be cleared by a doctor first.
Best Way to Know
A consultation with our qualified skin therapists is essential. They’ll assess:
Your skin type and tone
Current skin concerns
Medical history and medications
Treatment goals
In short: IPL Photo Rejuvenation is safe and effective for many people, especially with fair to medium skin and sun damage, but some people need to avoid it or take precautions.
What is the Pre and After Care?
Pre-Care (Before Treatment):
Avoid Sun Exposure: No tanning (sun or solarium) for at least 4 weeks before treatment. Use SPF daily.
No Self-Tanner: Stop fake tans 1–2 weeks prior.
Skin Care: Pause active products like retinols, glycolic/salicylic acids, or strong vitamin C 3 days before.
Medications: Inform your therapist of any medications (especially antibiotics, photosensitising drugs, or Roaccutane within 6–12 months).
Skin Prep: Come with clean skin—no makeup, lotions, perfumes, or deodorant in the treatment area.
Waxing/Plucking: Avoid hair removal methods that remove the follicle (waxing, tweezing) for 2 weeks before. Shaving is fine.
During Treatment (What to Expect):
Sensation: Feels like a quick “snap” or warm pulse on the skin (like a rubber band flick).
Protection: You’ll wear protective goggles for eye safety.
Comfort: Cooling gel or device cooling will be used to reduce heat and protect the skin.
Timeframe: Usually 20–45 minutes depending on the area treated.
Aftercare (Post-Treatment):
Redness/Warmth: Mild redness or warmth is normal and settles in a few hours.
Pigment Darkening: Brown spots may darken or look like “coffee grounds” before naturally flaking off over 7–10 days.
Sun Protection: Absolutely no tanning and apply SPF 30+ daily. Sun exposure can cause complications or undo results.
Skin Care: Use gentle cleansers and moisturisers. Avoid scrubs, retinols, acids, and exfoliation for at least 5–7 days.
Makeup: Can be applied the next day if skin isn’t irritated.
Heat/Activity: Avoid hot showers, saunas, spas, and intense exercise for 24–48 hours.
Follow-Up: Treatments are usually spaced 4 weeks apart for a series of 3–6 sessions.
In short: Prepare your skin, protect it during treatment, and prioritise SPF and gentle care afterwards for best results. You must eliminate UVR exposure to the treated area, making a full-spectrum SPF essential!
As with all IPL treatments, we can’t stress enough that the end result is largely influenced by your skincare prescription. Are you using a tyrosinase inhibitor at least two weeks prior to the start of the treatment (Darker Fitz Skin Types or skins prone to PIH)? Are you using vitamins A, B and C?
Is IPL Photo Rejuvenation Safe?
Yes — IPL Photo Rejuvenation is considered safe when performed by a trained professional, provided the client is a suitable candidate. Here’s a full breakdown:
Why it’s Safe:
Non-invasive: No needles or surgery, just controlled pulses of light.
Selective Targeting: IPL light targets pigment and blood vessels without damaging surrounding skin.
Minimal Downtime: Most people experience only mild redness or temporary darkening of spots.
Safety Features: Modern machines include cooling systems and filters to protect the skin.
Risks & Side Effects (Usually Mild & Temporary):
Redness, swelling, or warmth (similar to mild sunburn) for a few hours.
Pigment spots may darken before flaking off.
Rare: blistering, burns, or changes in skin pigmentation (more common in darker skin tones).
Not Safe for Everyone:
IPL isn’t suitable if you:
Have very dark skin (higher risk of burns or pigmentation issues).
Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Have active infections, open wounds, eczema, or psoriasis in the area.
Recently tanned (sun, solarium, or fake tan).
Take photosensitising medications (e.g. some antibiotics, acne meds like Roaccutane).
Have certain medical conditions (skin cancer, epilepsy, keloid scarring tendency).
How to Ensure Safety:
Always have a consultation and patch test first.
Be upfront about skin type, medical history, and medications.
Follow strict pre- and post-care instructions (especially sun avoidance and SPF use).
The best way to know if it’s right for you is to book a consultation with your practitioner.
How long should I wait between IPL Photo Rejuvenation appointments if I've bought a Package?
IPL Photorejuvenation involves little downtime. Depending on the severity of the client’s concern, 4 – 6 treatments are typically recommended monthly, with maintenance treatments recommended every 3 – 6 months.
Why the Wait is Important
Skin Recovery: Your skin needs time to heal and for pigmentation or redness to naturally fade or flake away.
Collagen Renewal: The stimulation of collagen takes several weeks, so spacing treatments allows results to build.
Safety: Reduces the risk of irritation, burns, or post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Typical Package Plan
A course of 4–6 sessions
Each session booked every 4 weeks
After the initial series, maintenance sessions may be done every 3–6 months, depending on your skin and goals.
