IPL Skin Rejuvenation: a fresh start for your skin

Our IPL skin rejuvenation services strategically address a number of the most common skin concerns with just a handful of treatments.

Pigmentation Correction

IPL pigmentation correction effectively fades and removes age spots, sun spots and freckles (discolouration) to greatly improve overall skin tone, texture and radiance.

Vascular Therapy

Spider veins, broken capillaries, red spots and rosacea can all be reduced and removed to offer clients an even, more uniform complexion.

Photo Rejuvenation

Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smooth out irregularities and enhance your skin’s overall luminosity for a revitalised, youthful glow with IPL photo rejuvenation.

Acne Management

IPL acne management targets acne-prone skin to reduce acne bacteria, breakouts and inflammation for a clearer, more balanced and healthier looking complexion.

What is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation refers to areas of the skin that become darker than the surrounding skin tone due to an overproduction of melanin. It can show up in various forms, including:

  • Dark spots or patches – Also known as sunspots, age spots, or liver spots; often caused by UV exposure.
  • Freckles – Small, scattered brown spots, usually appearing with sun exposure.
  • Melasma – Larger, symmetrical patches of brown or grey-brown pigment, often on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, or chin – unsuitable for IPL treatment.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) – Dark marks left behind after acne, injury, or inflammation – unsuitable for IPL treatment.
  • Uneven skin tone – General dullness or patchiness, giving the complexion a blotchy appearance.

Pigmentation can be subtle or pronounced and is often more visible in natural light or without makeup. While harmless, it can impact the overall clarity and radiance of the skin.

How does IPL Pigmentation Correction Work?

IPL pigmentation correction works by using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology to target and break down areas of excess pigmentation in the skin, such as sunspots, age spots, liver spots or freckles. Here’s a breakdown of how it works:

  1. Light Energy Absorption
IPL devices emit multiple wavelengths of light that penetrate the skin. The light is absorbed by melanin (the pigment that gives skin its color). Darker, pigmented areas absorb more light than surrounding skin.

  2. Heating & Fragmentation
The absorbed light converts into heat, which gently breaks down the clusters of excess melanin without damaging surrounding tissue.

  3. Natural Elimination
The body’s immune system gradually clears away these broken pigment particles over the following days to weeks.
Pigmented spots often darken first after treatment (a good sign), then flake off or fade naturally.

Is IPL Pigmentation Correction suitable for me?

IPL pigmentation correction is highly effective for the right candidates, but it’s not suitable for everyone. Here’s how you can tell if it’s likely a good option for you.

You’re a good candidate if:

  • Skin Type: You have fair to medium skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–III, sometimes IV with caution).

  • Pigmentation Type: Spots are caused by sun damage, age spots or freckles.

  • Pigment Contrast: The pigmentation is darker than your natural skin tone (this makes it easier for the IPL light to target the pigment).

  • Skin Condition: Skin is free from active infections, eczema, psoriasis, or open wounds in the treatment area.

  • Lifestyle: You can commit to sun protection and multiple sessions (usually 2–4) for best results.

Some cases are considered unsuitable for treatment:

  • Any raised lesion (actinic keratosis, moles, etc.).
  • Melasma, birthmarks, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIHP) or any other brown pigment that is not within the listed indications.
  • Fitzpatrick Skin Type V &VI (5-6).
  • Actinic bronzing (excessive sun damage/mottling) should not be treated with IPL pigment; instead, it should be treated with photorejuvenation.
  • Treatment should be avoided on the torso (below decolletage), legs and feet.
  • Clients who are not prepped four weeks prior.
  • Clients whose skin is not in optimal health (i.e. impaired barrier or compromised skin).
  • Clients who have a fake tan on the treatable area.

The best way to know if IPL pigmentation correction is right for you is to book a professional consultation and patch test.

During the consultation, your skin type, pigment type, and medical history will be assessed to ensure safety and effectiveness.

What is the Pre and After Care?

Pre Care

  1. Avoid Sun Exposure – No tanning (natural or solarium) for at least 2–4 weeks before treatment. Always wear SPF 30+ daily.

  2. Stop Active Skin Treatments – Discontinue retinol, tretinoin, AHAs/BHAs, Vitamin C, and other strong actives at least 5–7 days prior.

  3. No Waxing, Plucking, or Bleaching – These can irritate the skin or interfere with pigment targeting. Stop at least 1 week before treatment.

  4. Skin Condition – The area must be free from infection, open wounds, or active cold sores.

  5. Medications – Notify your provider if you’re on antibiotics, Roaccutane/Isotretinoin (must be stopped for 6–12 months), or photosensitising meds.

  6. Patch Test – Recommended to check skin reaction, especially for first-time clients or darker skin tones.

During the Treatment

  1. Preparation – Skin will be cleansed; protective eyewear provided.

  2. Sensation – Feels like a warm snap or rubber band flick on the skin. Most clients find it tolerable.

  3. Treatment Time – Usually 10–30 minutes depending on the area.

  4. Immediate Reaction – Treated spots may darken, swell slightly, or look “peppered.” This is normal and indicates the pigment has absorbed the light.

Aftercare:

  1. Redness & Swelling – Mild redness may last a few hours to 1–2 days. Apply cool compresses if needed.

  2. Pigment Darkening – Pigmented spots will darken and look more prominent for 3–7 days before flaking or fading naturally.

  3. No Picking or Scrubbing – Allow skin to heal and flake off naturally.

  4. Moisturise & Protect – Keep skin hydrated with a gentle, non-active moisturiser.

  5. Avoid Heat & Irritation – No hot showers, saunas, heavy exercise, or harsh products for 48 hours.

  6. Sun Protection – Absolutely crucial. Daily SPF 30–50 to protect healing skin and prevent new pigmentation.

  7. Follow-up – Multiple sessions (3–6 spaced 3–4 weeks apart) may be needed for best results.

Warning signs to watch for after treatment:

If you experience blistering, excessive swelling, or unusual pain, contact your practitioner.

Is IPL Pigmentation Correction Safe?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) pigmentation correction is a safe, non-invasive treatment designed to target unwanted pigmentation such as freckles, sunspots, and age spots. It has been used safely for over 20 years and is one of the most trusted treatments for improving skin tone and clarity.

Why It’s Safe

  • No needles or surgery – light energy only.

  • Targets only pigment – leaves surrounding skin unharmed.

  • Quick sessions – most treatments take 10–30 minutes.

  • Minimal downtime – you can return to normal activities almost immediately.

What you may Notice

  • Mild redness or warmth (like a light sunburn) that fades within a few hours.

  • Pigmented spots may darken first (this is expected!) before flaking or fading over 3–7 days.

  • Clearer, more even skin with each session.

Possible (But Rare) Side Effects

Like any treatment, IPL can carry some risks:

  • Temporary swelling or crusting

  • Mild changes in skin colour (lighter or darker spots)

  • Blisters or burns (very rare, usually from incorrect settings or sun exposure)

Safety First!

To keep your treatment safe and effective:

  • Always have a consultation & patch test first.

  • Avoid sun exposure or tanning before and after treatment.

  • Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30–50 daily.

  • Follow all aftercare instructions carefully.

For the right skin type and pigmentation, IPL is a safe, effective way to achieve brighter, more even skin. The best way to know if it’s right for you is to book a consultation with your practitioner.

How long should I wait between IPL Pigmentation Correction appointments if I've bought a Package?

IPL Pigmentation treatment requires minimal downtime. Depending on the extent of your concern, typically, 2 – 4 treatments are recommended at monthly intervals (face) or 6 – 8 week intervals (decolletage, arms or upper back), with maintenance treatments recommended every six months to 1 year.

Don’t forget: daily sunscreen is essential after your treatments to protect your skin and prevent new pigmentation.
