What are Vascular Concerns?
Visible veins, redness, and broken capillaries can affect your skin’s clarity and confidence. Whether caused by genetics, sun exposure, or lifestyle factors, these cosmetic vascular concerns are common—and very treatable.
The following is a list of possible causes:
- Genetics (hereditary spider veins or broken capillaries) Sun damage and UV exposure
- Hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause) Rosacea or chronic skin inflammation
- Aging and thinning skin
- Extreme temperatures or lifestyle factors (alcohol, spicy foods)
How does IPL Vascular Therapy Work?
IPL vascular therapy (also known as IPL for vascular lesions or IPL vascular treatment) works by using intense pulsed light to target and reduce the appearance of visible blood vessels, such as broken capillaries, spider veins, or facial redness (often caused by conditions like rosacea).
IPL Vascular treatment is a non-ablative procedure that uses intense pulsed light to target haemoglobin in the skin, heating and damaging unwanted vessels. Damaged vessels are then removed via the lymphatic system, resulting in a more even skin tone. This treatment is used to spot treat vascular lesions of the face and upper body (reduce spot size).
Here’s how it works step by step:
1. Light Energy Targeting Hemoglobin
The IPL device emits a broad spectrum of light that is filtered to specific wavelengths. These wavelengths are absorbed by hemoglobin (the red pigment in blood). This makes IPL ideal for targeting unwanted blood vessels close to the skin’s surface.
2. Selective Photothermolysis
The absorbed light energy is converted into heat, which gently warms the vessel wall. This process is called selective photothermolysis—meaning the light selectively destroys the target (blood vessels) without significantly harming the surrounding skin.
3. Collapse of Vessels
The heat causes the walls of the small, superficial vessels to coagulate and collapse. Over time, the body naturally reabsorbs these damaged vessels, and the redness or broken capillaries fade.
4. Skin Healing & Results
After treatment, the treated area may look slightly red or flushed, and vessels may darken temporarily before fading. With a series of treatments (often 2–4 sessions), clients usually see clearer skin and a reduction in visible veins or redness.
Best for treating:
Facial telangiectasia (broken capillaries)
Spider veins (small superficial veins)
Rosacea-related redness
Cherry angiomas (small red spots)
Is Vascular Therapy suitable for me?
Suitability is really important when it comes to IPL vascular therapy, since it’s not safe or effective for everyone. Here’s a breakdown for you:
IPL Vascular Therapy is most suitable if:
You have fair to medium skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–III) — IPL works best when there is a strong contrast between the redness of the vessels and the surrounding skin.
You have superficial vascular concerns, such as:
Broken capillaries
Spider veins (small, surface-level)
Rosacea-related redness
Cherry angiomas (small red spots)
You’re not pregnant or breastfeeding.
You’re not taking photosensitising medications (some antibiotics, acne medication like isotretinoin, etc.).
You’re willing to follow strict sun protection before and after treatments.
IPL Vascular Therapy may not be suitable if:
You have dark or deeply tanned skin (higher Fitzpatrick types, IV–VI) — higher risk of burns, pigmentation changes, and reduced effectiveness.
Your vascular issue is deep or large (like varicose veins) — IPL only works on small, superficial vessels.
- Any vascular lesion below the heart -except cherry angiomas on the torso.
You’ve recently had strong chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser treatments in the same area.
You have photosensitive conditions (e.g., lupus) or a history of keloid scarring.
You have very thin or fragile skin that may not tolerate the heat.
The best way to know:
The gold standard is a consultation and patch test with your IPL technician. They’ll assess:
Your skin type & tone
The depth and size of your blood vessels
Your medical history & medications
How your skin reacts to a test pulse
This ensures it’s safe, effective, and tailored to you. The best way to know if it’s right for you is to book a consultation with your practitioner.
What is the Pre and After Care?
Pre-Treatment Care
To prepare the skin and ensure the best results:
Avoid sun exposure & tanning (including solariums and fake tan) for 2–4 weeks prior to treatment.
No waxing, threading, or chemical peels in the treatment area for at least 1–2 weeks.
Stop using active skincare (retinol, AHA/BHA acids, benzoyl peroxide, strong vitamin C) for 3–5 days before treatment.
No photosensitising medications (like certain antibiotics or acne medication) — check with your practitioner if unsure.
Arrive with clean skin (no makeup, lotion, deodorant, or self-tanner).
During Treatment
What clients can expect in the session:
A cooling gel is applied to protect the skin and improve light conduction.
The IPL handpiece delivers pulses of light, which feel like a quick elastic band snap or warm prickling sensation.
The light targets hemoglobin in the vessels, causing them to coagulate and collapse.
Treatment time is typically 10–30 minutes, depending on the size of the area.
Protective eyewear must be worn throughout the session.
Aftercare
To promote healing and protect results:
Expect mild redness, swelling, or darkening of vessels for 24–72 hours — this is normal and subsides.
Apply a soothing gel or aloe vera as directed.
Avoid sun exposure and always use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily.
No hot showers, saunas, swimming, or exercise that causes overheating for 24–48 hours.
Avoid active skincare (retinols, AHAs, scrubs) for 3–5 days post-treatment.
Do not pick or scratch the treated area, as this may cause scarring or infection.
Multiple sessions (usually 2–4 treatments spaced 3–4 weeks apart) may be needed for optimal results.
Possible Side Effects:
Temporary redness, swelling, or bruising
Vessels may look darker before fading
Rarely: blistering, pigment changes, or scarring (minimised by following aftercare)
Is IPL Vascular Therapy Safe?
Yes — IPL vascular therapy is generally considered safe when performed by a trained professional, on the right candidate, and with proper pre- and post-care.
Here’s what you should know:
Why it’s Safe
Selective targeting: IPL uses light that is specifically absorbed by hemoglobin in blood vessels, meaning it targets the vessels without damaging most surrounding tissue.
Non-invasive: No needles or surgery, just light pulses.
Controlled settings: Modern IPL machines allow practitioners to adjust wavelength, intensity, and pulse duration based on your skin type and concern.
Possible Side Effects (Usually Temporary)
Redness and swelling for a few hours to a couple of days.
Darkening of vessels before they fade.
Mild bruising or crusting in some cases.
Rarely: blistering, pigment changes, or scarring — usually linked to incorrect settings, poor aftercare, or treating unsuitable skin types.
When it may not be Safe
IPL vascular therapy may not be suitable if you:
Have dark or recently tanned skin (higher risk of burns or pigmentation issues).
Take photosensitising medications or have photosensitive conditions.
Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Have large/deep veins (like varicose veins, which need medical treatment instead).
Have certain skin conditions (eczema, infections, active cold sores) in the treatment area.
Our Safety Tip
The most important safety step is a professional consultation and patch test before your first session. This ensures your skin reacts safely and the treatment can be customised to you.
How long should I wait between IPL Vascular Therapy appointments if I've bought a Package?
IPL Vascular treatment has minimal downtime. Depending on the extent of the client’s concern, typically, 2 – 4 treatments are recommended at 1 – 2 week intervals, with maintenance treatments recommended every 3 – 6 months.
